The horse must be naturally gaited, "baroque" in appearance (see Breed Standard at end of document), and must have a traceable genetic connection to one of the original Baroque horse breeds in Group 1. The breeds listed below in Group 2 and Group 3 have been found through research done at an international level to have a genetic link to the original Baroque breeds listed in Group 1. The purebred baroque breed parent (Group1), if not gaited, cannot be registered as a GBH but is very valuable to the breed as a founding sire or dam and will be noted historically. The "non-baroque" breed parent (Group 2, Group 3, or not listed) is not required to have registration papers from outside breeds but must be baroque in type and of excellent breeding quality. This parent will be evaluated on an individual basis as to which group it will belong. Initially, the majority of the horses registered as GBHs are crosses between Group 1 horses and Group2/Group 3 horses. However, we hope to move toward breeding more registered GBHs to other registered GBHs once more breeding stock has been established in the GBH breed. Purebred horses from other breeds listed in Group 2 and Group 3 can also be registered in their corresponding group if they are gaited and meet the Breed Standard.

etc.)
Lusitano
Lipizzan
Friesian
Sorraia
Barb (N. African Barb, original Arab-Barb, no Arab-Barb crosses)
Kladruby *pending*
| Notes: "PSP" is the new name for the Portuguese/Spanish Andalusian. The Arab-Barb is its own breed, approximately 1500 years old. The Knabstrupper is not included since there is too much Frederiksborg (TB) blood in it and not so baroque in type. Kladruby's are extremely rare - none may ever be available. Will add Asturcon Pony if any become available for registration or breeding. |

= 100% baroque ancestry = Foundation

| Registerable Crosses |
Group 1 | Group 2 | Group 3 | Not Listed |
| Group 1 | Foundation & Breeding Stock | Breeding Stock (Foundation) | Breeding Stock (Foundation) | Pleasure (Breeding Stock, Foundation) |
| Group 2 | Breeding Stock (Foundation) | Breeding Stock (Foundation) | Pleasure (Breeding Stock) | Pleasure (Breeding Stock) |
| Group 3 | Breeding Stock (Foundation) | Pleasure (Breeding Stock) | Pleasure (Breeding Stock) | Not Registerable |
| Not Listed | Pleasure (Breeding Stock, Foundation) | Pleasure (Breeding Stock) | Not Registerable | Not Registerable |
Example:
-If a horse registered in Group 1 is crossed with a horse
registered in Group 2, the resulting offspring (if gaited) is
elegible for registration as Breeding Stock or Foundation when it
reaches breeding age.
Group 1 Crosses
-Gaited purebred (100%) horses from Group 1 will automatically be
registered as Foundation Horses.
-Non-gaited horses from Group 1 are not registerable as Gaited
Baroque Horses but are allowed as sires or dams.
-Horses from Group 1 crossed with horses from Group 2: gaited
offspring will be registered as Breeding Stock and can be
considered for registration as Foundation.
-Horses from Group 1 crossed with horses from Group 3: gaited
offspring will be registered as Breeding Stock and can be
considered for registration as Foundation Horses.
-Horses from Group 1 crossed with horses not listed: gaited
offspring will be registered as Pleasure and can be considered
for registration as Breeding Stock or Foundation.
Group 2 Crosses
-Horses from Group 2 crossed with horses from Group 2: gaited
offspring will be registered as Breeding Stock and can be
considered for registration as Foundation Horses.
-Horses from Group 2 crossed with horses from Group 3 or horses
not listed: gaited offspring will be registered as Pleasure Horse
and can be considered for registration as Breeding Stock.
Group 3 Crosses
-Horses from Group 3 crossed with gaited horses from Group 3:
gaited offspring will be registered as Pleasure Horse and can be
considered for registration as Breeding Stock.
-Gaited horses from Group 3 crossed with horses not listed:
gaited offspring is not registerable unless one parent has been
approved as Breeding Stock or Foundation.
*** Once a horse has been evaluated and approved to move up one group (example, moved from Group 2/Breeding Stock to Group 1/Foundation), the breeding rules for the new higher group will then be applied to that horse, regardless of the horse's breeding. ***
Registry Policies
The GBHA reserves the right to refuse registration for *any*
horse not meeting the general requirements, gait requirements, or
Breed Standard (see below), regardless of the breeding of the
horse. In this case, all registration fees will be refunded.
Until gait and type is "set" in the breed, ALL
offspring of GBHA registered parents must still meet Intermediate
Gait Requirements. The GBHA reserves the right to cancel any
horses registration if it becomes evident that artificial
or inhumane methods have been used to enhance the horses
gait. The GBHA also reserves the right to make slight changes to
the Registration Rules in the best interest of the Gaited Baroque
Horse breed.

Upon registration, owner will receive a GBHA registration certificate with a 3-generation pedigree of the horse. If the 3-generation pedigree information is not listed on any registration certificates from other registries, please provide this information (if known) to the GBHA upon application. The estimated percentage of baroque ancestry will be listed on certificate for the registry's tracking purposes. From this information also, different types or pools of Gaited Baroque Horses may eventually be created (ex., Draft type, pony type, etc.).
NEW: If a foal cannot be witnessed or videotaped in its intermediate gait(s), Temporary registration papers will be issued. Upon maturity, the Temporary registration papers will be converted to Permanent papers when the gait requirements are met (for no additional fee). If the gait requirements are not met within a reasonable amount of time and the adult horse cannot be shown to exhibit any intermediate gaits, the GBHA registration papers will be revoked and no refund will be given.
